Vardo

We're now in Vardo which is as far east as we're going along the peninsula.

Vardo is connected to the mainland by an undersea tunnel which has very steep ends - it's a 2nd gear climb up the other side! It's a tiny island which, being at the entrance to the Barents sea, is of great military significance. So much so that this is the northern most active fort in the world - the military presence is tiny - there's just one permanent soldier!

The tiny fort at Vardo is a perfect 8 pointed star shape.

The inside has been restored to the way it was in the 18th Century.

The commandant's quarters - a cold and bleak place even in summer

Watch out the commandant's here.... phew it's "oh wise one" again!

Temporarily on duty - it's really cold here so we didn't hang around for long.
