Saltstraumen

After spending the night at 2000ft in the carpark of the Arctic Circle Centre we've come north to Saltstraumen.

Saltstraumen has the strongest tidal current in the World.  Four times each day 400 million cubic meters of water flows through this 150m wide gap reaching speeds up to 22 knots (25mph).

The water swirls into whirlpools or maelstroms - this Norwegian word  was first used to describe the powerful tidal currents around the Lofoten islands where we're heading later today.
