Grense Jacobselev

After visiting Vardo we retraced our footsteps (tyre tracks) and returned to the parking area at Gorgnetak to spend the night.

Today we've driven even further east to Kirkeness which is the official border crossing into Russia. We drove almost to the checkpoint and then turned north and followed the river which forms the border all of the way up to the coast at Grense Jacobselev.

The church at Grense Jacobselev overooks the Russian border. There were often disputes between Norwegian and Russian fishermen so the District Administrator asked for a gunboat to be situated at the river mouth. A Norwegian marine officer suggested they should instead build a church as a cultural border defence to the east!
