Hiking in the Finnish Wilderness

After spending the night in a layby just inside the Finnish border, this morning we're driving further south through the wilderness. The far north of Finland is really sparsely populated and completely different from Norway. Here we're driving on long, wide and straight roads surrounded by pine trees and thousands of lakes.

The Elk likes Emma - whilst driving this morning we were lucky to see an elk and her baby grazing by the roadside. This is quite rare as despite their size they've incredibly timid creatures.

We've stopped at Urho Keklonen National Park Centre to follow one of the marked wilderness trails.
This is another of the fabulous BBQ area's - sadly we've nothing to cook today.

A massive ant hill - there must be millions of pine needs here!

Walking on the trail - note the "stout boots" again.

Inside a camping cabin - there are hundreds of these dotted around the countryside. Completely free to use whilst hiking they are treated with respect and left in the way you would like to find them.
