Cycling the Megalith Route

We left Haren after breakfast and headed south to Assen where, having parked in a dedicated MH place and had lunch, we unloaded our bikes and headed out of town in search of the megaliths.

The first of many megaliths, this one is unique in that it has all of the individual elements which made up the original megalith still in place. Once again the signage was almost non-existent - we only spotted this one across a field by accident!

Spooky plant holders spotted en-route.

The church at Loon.

Another stork on a stick.

The excellent cycle routes were our saviour and the strategically placed maps showed where the megaliths were located. We chose a loop from Anloo which took us into the woods and back.

The first megalith we came across near Anloo is less well preserved.

The second pile of stones is better preserved.

An unfinished train track.... are we in Spain?

To reach our last megalith of the day - one of the biggest so far - we had to take another long loop via the village of Eext and along a very straight road to Rolde.

The church at Rolde en-route back to Kiki.
